Coldest May in Years Slows Crab, Lobster Fisheries, Stabilizes Prices

June 1st is a good time to take stock of the Canadian snow crab fisheries, as a significant portion of the quota is now landed, and the end of the season at the end of June or first part of July is in sight.
As we report elsewhere today, ice conditions in Newfoundland are the worst in years, and pack ice is socked in along the northeast coast. This has slowed crab fishing in some areas, and forced boats to deliver to plants that are ice-free.
At the same time, May has seen a series of storms, including a significant snow storm in the Province on May 24th, and this has kept fishing down.
The result is that at this point about 43% of the Newfoundland quota has been landed. There is some fear that unless the situation breaks and catches improve, the reduced Newfoundland quota for 2017 may not be caught...
